It doesn't seem that very many people know about this, and I doubt seriously that it's even mentioned in our public schools anymore, sort of like Flag Day. President Harry Truman wanted a holiday to give the opportunity for everyone to thank our heroes for their service to our country. This day was established August 31, 1949 by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, and replaced separate days for each branch of the military. The idea for a single day rather than separate days came from all of the different branches being brought together under the Department of Defense.

Good Idea!! This is the time when all combat Vets reflect on our buddies who didn't make it home or have died in the past. For many it is a very SAD time.
But now days, this day is just another excuse for getting drunk and partying down.
The world is going to hell in a hand basket-- but that's |OK-- because Jesus Christ will set ALL THINGS RIGHT in the near future.

Amen, to both Dirk and Tom. Our strong military keeps us free, but there is a price to pay for it. Sometimes it makes us wonder if the price was worth it when we consider what America has become today.
Carry on soldier. And don't purchase any "Made in China" U.S flag for a veteran.

Amen to your solute to our armed forces. My Father-In-Law was in WWII, and we were fortunate enough to be with him to celebrate the dedication of the WWII memroial in Washington, D.C. My brother was in the Navy for seven years, and I was able to visit him several times at his base. Thanks for caring, and thanks for stopping by my journal :o)

We have stupid hoidays like Sweetest Day or Secretary day and they are well known but i bet 75% of the U.S. has no idea about Armed Forces Day. Damn shame!

A lot of people in this United States have forgot about the lost brothers in arms. Those who say lets pull out of Iraq place the dollar amount in front of the value of a soldiers lives.
I say this in deep sorrow because I think of the soldiers that have already died in this war. What did they die for, to pull out before the job is complete would insure that their deaths were in vane!
Just another way for them to spit in a soldiers face. I'm sorry if I get emotional but, I care.

Don't see it marked on a single calendar!! I do know our churches usually honor all branches near Memorial Day. And our high school hosts a special tribute to veterans each year. But we are small town America. - Barbara
